How To Renew A Residence Visa In The United Arab Emirates – Detailed Process & Requirements

The UAE government is one of the most welcoming and inclusive countries in the world. UAE has a very simple residency requirement process for foreigners who want to live or work there. Foreigners who are living in the UAE may be able to renew their residence visa by following this process:

– Submit an application form to the Ministry of Interior (MOI) with all relevant documents, including a valid passport and copy of your current residence visa.

– The MOI will then send you an SMS message with your new residency visa number and expiration date.

When should I renew my visa?

If your resident’s visa has expired and you need it renewed, then you only have 30 days from the date of expiry to apply. However, if it is less than a few months before your trip and you want to renew in advance (1-6 months), then permission approval must be granted first.

Step 1 – Fill in the Emirates ID application.

To apply for your Emirates ID, you first have to submit your application online or in person at the Emirates ID office. According to Amer, a center that processes immigration applications on behalf of Dubai’s General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA), the cost of renewing your Emirates ID depends on the validity of your Emirates ID:

  • AED 195 – for one year
  • AED 295 – for two years
  • AED 395 – for three years

How long will the process take?

Obtaining an Emirates ID can take up to 5 days. Once it is done, the application is approved and printed by ICP, you will be notified of this via email and collect your ID from the Emirates Post office near you.

You can get a digital version of your Emirates ID while you wait for the physical card.

Step 2: Take the medical fitness test

You will need to undergo the medical fitness test before you can apply for the Emirates ID. This is mandatory for UAE residents under the age of 18, who are applying for a visa renewal.

UAE has a routine medical fitness test that all residents take to make sure they are clear of diseases such as HIV and TB.

This is a mandatory medical test for all visitors to Dubai; you’ll need to visit an approved government medical centre. Different medical centres cater to different visa holders.

  • Abu Dhabi – Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA), Disease Prevention and Screening Centre
  • Dubai – Dubai Health Authority (DHA), Medical Fitness Centres
  • Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, and Umm Al Quwain – Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) Medical Examination centres.

Once you’ve completed the medical test, it will take up to a week before your results are sent to you by SMS and email. The certificate for the medical fitness test is also sent via courier as soon as possible according to MOHAP.

Required documents

Regardless of where you apply, you will need the following documents:

  • Valid Passport copy
  • Valid Emirates ID copy
  • Colored photograph with white background
  • You may also need to keep a copy of your Emirates ID application form, depending on which Emirate you are applying in.

Cost

The standard cost for a medical fitness test is AED 250.

Step 3: Renew your residence permit

On 16 May, ICP announced that UAE nationals are no longer required to show residence visa stickers. However, due to an error in communication between the different jurisdictions in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, it is expected that visa stickers will still be issued for a short period of time.

Once you have your fitness certificate delivered to your home, you can continue the process of applying for a residency visa.

After you complete the online form, you will have to wait for an online agent to process the application. Once processed, the courier company will collect your passport from the address that you’ve provided.

If you finish some of the paperwork at the center and then submit your passport to a courier service, you will be able to take advantage of this service’s kiosk at the center.

Documents

For the residence visa renewal, you will need to submit the following documents:

  • A recent colour photograph with a white background.
  • Passport copy
  • Medical fitness certificate
  • Emirates ID application
  • Medical Insurance or Health Card.

Cost:

According to ICP, these are the fees for renewing your residence visa:

  • Application Fees: AED 50
  • Issuance fees: AED 100
  • ICP service fees: AED 50

Step 4: Collect your renewed Emirates ID and passport copy

Once your visa has been approved, you will receive a passport with the sticker containing your visa. This is delivered through an approved courier company.

Your Emirates ID will also be delivered to an Emirates Post Office branch, at an address provided by you. You will then need to collect it.
